PSA Sets The Record Straight; Reiterates Call for an Interoperable Broadband Data Network
September 21, 2011In strong reaction to media comments attributed to House Energy and Commerce Committee Majority staff earlier this week, the leadership of the Public Safety Alliance today challenged Chairman Upton and subcommittee Chairman Walden to back up their staff claims. In recent misleading comments in the press about the lessons learned from the East Coast earthquake House Commerce Committee’s Republican majority staff was quoted as saying “The big lesson from last month’s Virginia earthquake is that carriers need more spectrum, not public safety.”
“That won’t solve the problem,” according to past APCO President Dick Mirgon.

August 19, 2011The APCO International Professional Communications Human Resources Taskforce (ProCHRT) released its final report and recommendations on Aug. 5 during the APCO conference in Philadelphia. During the Aug. 7 First General Business Session in Philadelphia, task force Chair Steve Souder told the APCO leadership, “For the last year, the [ProCHRT] task force gathered information and stats. Unfortunately today, even though that [final] report is 51 pages, it still rates an F.”

August 2, 2011APCO International and NENA continue working together to develop an XML standard for incident information sharing in a Next Generation 9-1-1 environment. The product of this effort will be called the Emergency Incident Data Document (EIDD). During EIDD discussions, members of the workgroup realized that to efficiently share incident information, the receiving agency must be able to easily understand the type of incident being shared.

The official title of this standard, approved by ANSI on Jan. 15, 2009, is the Alarm Monitoring Company to Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) Computer-aided Dispatch (CAD) External Alarm Interface Exchange — APCO/CSAA 2.101.1-2008, abbreviated the “External Alarm Interface Exchange.”
