You’ve Inherited a Million Dollars…and Other Social Engineering Tactics

APCO International August 12, 2019 Industry
Monday, August 12, 3:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.
Presenter: Megan Bixler, APCO International; Crystal McDuffie, APCO International

Social media is essential for emergency communications centers (ECCs) to perform one-way and two-way communications with citizens.  However, there are a lot of social media platforms that citizens will expect to be able to communicate with ECCs.  Crystal McDuffie outlined some best practices for social media usage, including clearly stating the type of communication (one-way vs. two-way) jurisdictions use, drafting social media ECC policies, and referring to the APCO ANSI Standard for Social Media Best Practices.

After McDuffie discussed all of the benefits of using social media to ECC communications with the public, Ms. Bixler discussed all of the information that could be used to social engineer ECCs.  In combination, this session educated on effective social media practices while maintaining a good cybersecurity posture.
