Leadership and Self-Care in the PSAP: Making it a Reality

APCO International August 12, 2019 Industry
Monday, August 12, 4:30 – 5:30 PM
Presenters: Kimberly Miller, Tina Buneta and Chris Freeman

“It’s imperative to make self-care THE priority in your center, ” according to Tina Buneta. “You cannot let a lack of money stop you from exploring every option for improving the wellness of your employees.”

  • Remember to take time to build trust. Trust is built from relationships, and those are about the small things.
  • As leaders you set the vision and establish buy-in, but remember to hold people accountable. Creating a change team can help, but requires floor buy-in and engagement to work.
  • Deal with resistance by being approachable and asking questions. Why do you think this won’t work? How would you make it work? Your front line is full of ideas.
  • Some good ideas for self care: PEER support, on staff or retainer for a psychologist/counselor, therapy dogs, massage, quiet room.
  • Be creative about building these programs, not everything has to come with a lot of cost.
