Meet Your AFC Advisors: Michael Scales (New Mexico)
AFC, APCO’s frequency coordination department, is pleased to introduce its network of dedicated local advisor volunteers. APCO’s advisors are responsible for frequency coordination in their home state and we would like to bring awareness and recognition to the dedication they exhibit on a daily basis. Please feel free to reach out to our local advisors with any questions dealing with FCC Part 90 licensing and frequency coordination.
Michael Scales has been the APCO AFC Local Frequency Advisor for the State of New Mexico since 2010. He is currently employed by Sandoval County as the Communications Administrator/COML. Michael is a New Mexico Certified Emergency Manager (NMCEM) and Communications Team Leader (COML). He is responsible for the maintenance of the County radio system. Michael is active with the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security Statewide Interoperable Communications Working group (SICWG) and presently serves as chair of the group.
Michael was awarded “Outstanding Emergency Management Support Staff Member 2009” by the New Mexico Emergency Management Association, and was the AFC Rookie of the year in 2011. He is an avid Amateur Radio Operator and holds a General Class license K5SCA. Michael attended New Mexico Military Institute, and served in the United States Army as a Combat Medic.
Michael has been involved in public safety radio for the last 30 years, from installation of equipment to dispatching and administering radio system designs and maintenance. His knowledge of the local community needs and situations helps APCO perform the necessary coordination for New Mexico.
