‘Pocket Dialing’ Has Consequences for 9-1-1 Dispatchers, Police

Many have become victim to it. You answer your phone and hear muffled noises on the other end. Or, you see a friend’s name flash on your Caller ID, only to pick up the phone and hear that person clearly talking to someone else. In other words, you’ve been pocket-dialed. Sandy Takes Out 25% of Cell Towers

NEW YORK (AP) — Superstorm Sandy knocked out a quarter of the cell towers in an area spreading across 10 states, and the situation could get worse, federal regulators said Tuesday. The landline phone network has held up better in the affected area, which stretches from Virginia to Massachusetts, the FCC said, but about a quarter of cable customers are also without service.

Chronic 9-1-1 Callers to Get Aid from ‘Community Paramedics’

October 31, 2012

In hopes of giving better care and saving money, the Honolulu Emergency Services Department will begin deploying “community paramedics” to help people who call 911 so often that they are on a first-name basis with the dispatchers. The Emergency Services Department has been meeting with community partners to develop the program, including the Queen’s Medical Center, the University of Hawaii Medical School, social service and homeless shelter providers.
