Standards for public safety communications training coordinators & public safety telecommunicators now online

The APCO Standards Development Committee has been working hard to create and revise national standards for public safety communications. Here is the latest update from the committee.

Candidate APCO ANS 3.104.1-200x:
Core Competencies and Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Communications Training Coordinators

This proposed standard identifies the minimum training requirements for Public Safety Communications Training Coordinators.  This position is typically tasked with the planning, development, coordination, implementation and administration of training within a public safety communications center. This document seeks to define the knowledge, skills and duties of the individual responsible for the training program, as well as the agency’s responsibilities for providing training to individuals in this critical function.

The 45-day public review and comment period is Sept. 3–Oct. 18. To download the updated Candidate ANS draft, click here. Candidate APCO ANS 3.103.1-200x:
Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Telecommunicator

This APCO standard identifies the minimum training requirements for Public Safety Telecommunicators. This position is typically charged with receiving, processing, transmitting and conveying public safety information to dispatchers, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, emergency medical and emergency management personnel. This document seeks to define training in certain knowledge, skills, and abilities to be provided to telecommunicators by the agency.

The third public review and comment period is Aug. 27–Sept. 26. The public review and comment period pertains to only those sections with proposed changes resulting from the previous review. Please review sections 7.4, 8.2.3, 9.2.3 and 10.2.3 for the proposed changes and submit any comments with suggested resolutions pertaining to those sections only by Sept. 26.
