Can’t Find Radio Frequencies? Try TV Channel White Space

Hot Products 2011

For the past several years, an anonymous team of experienced communications professionals has roamed the exhibit hall at the Annual APCO International Conference & Exposition reviewing new products (those released in the past year) and bringing their favorites to our attention for publication in Public Safety Communications. This year, we had about 90 entries from more than 70 companies. It was nice to see so many companies investing in product development for public safety communications. In Philadelphia, our reviewers got their hands on the technology, asked the tough questions and drew conclusions. Similarly, the increased use of novel public safety applications, such as video streaming, street cameras, automatic license plate recognition and the coming proliferation of sensors and M2M (machine-to-machine) devices, will increasingly strain public safety’s wireless networks.

Line-of-Duty-Death Handbook Now Available

A death in the line of duty is arguably one of the more stressful events for first responders, especially those in EMS whose goal is to arrive on scene with the promise of bringing aid. And because many EMS agencies don’t have set protocols and procedures in place for tasks like notifying co-workers and next of kin, and coordinating the logistics of the funeral, line-of-duty deaths are events that most EMS agencies are the least prepared to address.
