Where’s the Money?

Much of what Congress, the FCC and other federal agencies attempt to do in the realm of public safety telecommunications policy is to promote efficiency and enhanced capabilities, such as interoperability, broadband radio communications and NG9-1-1. In the private sector, these goals would be pursued in the interest of profits, potentially opening the door to capital investments to turn the goals into reality. The government sector obviously lacks a profit motive and must appropriate funds purely on the basis of improving the public good. That simple reality sometimes gets lost when telecommunications policy is being made.

Bleak Grant Outlook for 2011

Politicians tell us that the recession has ended. If you asked a person standing in an unemployment line in New York, Philadelphia, Denver or Los Angeles if they agree with that assessment, they would probably say no. If you look at many state and local budgets, prosperity is hard to find. More and more, states are withholding funds that used to be passed on to municipalities to help with their projects.

Finances Threaten Sequatchie 9-1-1 Office

Chattanooga, Tenn. — The Sequatchie County 9-1-1 office could be put under Tennessee Emergency Communications Board supervision if a recent audit shows it in the red for a third consecutive year, officials say. Sequatchie County commissioners last week approved $40,000 for the county’s 9-1-1 District to keep the department running until the end of the fiscal year on June 30.

To encourage women over age 50 across the country to recognize the signs and symptoms of heart attack and call 9-1-1 promptly, the Office on Women’s Health has announced a Request for Applications for its Heart Attack Symptoms & Calling 9-1-1 Campaign for Women. Funding is available for activities and events in support of the campaign.

2011 NSDI CAP Now Accepting Grant Applications; Deadline Jan. 6, 2011

The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) has formally announced the request for proposals to support the 2011 National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP). A total of $800,000 is available to award an estimated 21 innovative, geospatial-related projects that are spread across six categories. Each project will focus on ways to expand the geospatial data infrastructure that is necessary to effectively discover, access, share, manage and use digital geographic data.
